How a fast-growing open-source platform drives paid subscriptions using Stigg

Amplication is an open-source SaaS backend development platform that empowers developers and software engineers to accelerate the development of their Node.js applications. With Amplication, teams can build critical applications faster, more reliably, and with greater consistency, resulting in increased productivity and a more streamlined development process.

The Challenge

As a true open-source platform, Amplication has been offering their software for free for a while.

With a fast-growing customer base and a maturing product, the team felt the time was finally right to start offering an Enterprise edition of their platform.

So, they started looking for a shortcut to build their pricing plans, gate features, and launch a pricing page. “We believe in investing our time in our core competency and not in reinventing the wheel - the exact concept behind Amplication. Building something in-house to support our pricing plans was never the goal.”, remembers Erez Greenberg, Head of Product at Amplication.

The Solution

When Amplication found Stigg, they had already started the integration with a different tool.

“What I love about Stigg is that they cover everything we need, and so much more, out-of-the-box: reverse trials, entitlement checks, usage metering, all the plan building and management, snap-in, fully customizable paywall widgets, a/b testing, a native Stripe integration, … We didn’t find this level of control in any other tool.” says Erez. “Plus, we spare ourselves a vendor lock. If we ever want to switch billing, we can do that in a click.”

By the time Amplication integrated with Stigg, they already had over 20K users. “Importing them was pretty easy with the import feature Stigg has'' remembers Erez.

The Results

Within 10 days, Amplication had their pricing model ready for testing. The team was able to go live with their first pricing plans, gated features, in-app paywall, and a public pricing page - all built with and operated from Stigg - and could start tweaking it.

“I love the paywall widget. It was so easy for us to get our pricing on the website and inside the app, fully customized to our look & feel, and operated from our Stigg account.” Erez notes.

“Thanks to Stigg, we were able to release our first pricing in half the time and with a lot more capabilities. The level of responsiveness and full dedication to our goals that Stigg’s engineering team shows us is truly top-notch. Really amazing!”

On top of the initial setup, Amplication saves a lot of time managing their pricing with Stigg. “We’re doing things so much faster now. Managing entitlements and packaging, updating the paywall, giving individual accounts VIP treatment by unlocking promotional feature access, … All of that would have taken us so much longer without Stigg, I don’t even want to estimate how much. It’s amazing that we got it all out of the box.”

Amplication just got started monetizing their product. While the initial goal was to launch their pricing, this is only the beginning. “The best thing with Stigg is, we have the option. Whatever we plan to do in the future, we can. We have access to experiments, usage tracking, building new plans, changing the pricing model … None of that will ever be a concern for my team or our developers, now and in the future.”
